Every 10 minutes, a woman loses her life to gender-based violence.
In 2023, over 51,000 women were tragically murdered in acts of femicide, underscoring the pressing need for systemic change. This crisis extends beyond homes, infiltrating workplaces and online spaces, and is exacerbated by broader societal issues like conflict and climate change, which increase the risks faced by women and girls.
The UN’s annual 16 Days of Activism campaign, running from November 25 to December 10, seeks to rally individuals, communities, and leaders to unite against this scourge. This year’s theme, “Every 10 Minutes, a Woman is Killed. #NoExcuse,” calls on governments and organisations to adopt robust strategies, hold perpetrators accountable, and amplify funding for women’s rights movements.
The campaign reminds us that violence against women is preventable and challenges everyone to take a stand—whether by spreading awareness, supporting survivors, or demanding policy reforms.
Violence against women takes many forms, from verbal abuse, intimate partner violence to cyber-harassment, and forced marriages. Vulnerable populations, including migrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those in humanitarian crises, face an even greater risk.
To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and fulfill the promise of equality and human rights for all, eradicating violence against women and girls must be a global priority.
By participating in the #NoExcuse campaign, sharing its message, and advocating for change, we can collectively help dismantle the structures that perpetuate this injustice and pave the way for a safer, more equitable world.
